BGE (Northern Ireland)

Subcontracted to carry out an ecological impact assessment of sections of the proposed route of the Northern Ireland North-West gas pipeline which runs from Carrickfergus in Co. Antrim to Derry City and Coolkeeragh power station in Co. Derry. Involved looking at all field boundaries, mature trees and wetland habitats (rivers and streams) within 50m either side of the proposed pipeline route.

Department of Finance and Personnel

Habitat survey of Stormont Estate and associated habitat creation advice for Department of Finance and Personnel in conjunction with Ecoseeds Ltd. (www.ecoseeds.co.uk).

Environment and Heritage Service

  • Production and editing of Northern Ireland Habitat Actions Plans (HAPS) for reedbeds, fens, coastal and floodplain grazing marsh, marl lakes, mesotrophic lakes and eutrophic standing waters under the UK Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) process for Environment and Heritage Service, Northern Ireland.
  • Survey of 30 Sites of Local Nature Conservation Importance (SLNCIs) in County Armagh for the Environment and Heritage Service, Northern Ireland for incorporation into District Area Plans. Involved habitat surveys/evaluation and mapping the boundary of each site.
  • Survey of 56 sites of Local Nature Conservation Importance (SLNCIs) in Limavady District Council Area, County Londonderry for the Environment and Heritage Service, Northern Ireland for incorporation into District Area Plans.  
  • Survey of ca 300 Sites of Local Nature Conservation Importance (SLNCIs) in Counties Antrim and Down for the Environment and Heritage Service, Northern Ireland for incorporation into six different District Area Plans.

Forest Service Northern Ireland

Survey of Potential Ancient Woodland Sites (PAWS) within Forest Management Units (FMUs) in Cos. Fermanagh (Castlearchdale and Ely Lodge, Lower Lough Erne), Antrim and Tyrone for Northern Ireland Forest Service to comply with the UK Woodland Assurance Scheme (UKWAS), the timber certification process for the UK forestry industry under Forest Stewardship Council certification.

Composite Biodiversity Report of six hospital sites for Health Estates Agency Northern Ireland.

RES UK and Ireland Ltd.

Ecological impact assessment of potential windfarm sites at Altahullion, Co. Londonderry and at Callagheen, Co. Fermanagh.

Woodland Trust UK

Survey of 81 woodland sites in Co. Fermanagh as part of Woodland Trust UK Ancient Woodland Inventory of Northern Ireland.

Coillte Teoranta

Ecological survey and conservation management plans for two woodlands in Co. Wicklow (Ballygannon Woods, Rathdrum and Shelton Abbey, Arklow) for Coillte Teoranta as part of the People’s Millennium Forest Project.This project included an ecological survey of a stretch of the Avonmore River.

Fingal County Council

  • Historical landscape assessment of Malahide Castle Demesne for Fingal County Council under The Great Gardens of Ireland Restoration Programme.
  • Tree surveys of Malahide Castle Demesne and Ardgillan Demesne, Balbriggan, Co. Dublin and a tree survey and Historical Landscape Assessment of Newbridge Demesne, Donabate, Co. Dublin for Fingal County Council under The Great Gardens of Ireland Restoration Programme.

Irish Wildlife Trust

Desktop study for the non-governmental organization Irish Wildlife Trust involving identification of sites that potentially qualify as Special Areas of Conservation on the basis that they contain significant areas of Annex I habitats or Annex II species of flora and fauna (e.g. Salmo salar, Margaritifera margaritifera) as defined under the EU Habitats Directive.

National Botanic Gardens

Compilation and editing of the annualseed catalogue (Index Seminum) for the National Botanic Gardens, Dublin.

Botanical research compiling species accounts and dichotomous keys using the taxonomic literature and plant collections in gardens of national importance for selected plant families for the European Garden Flora, volumes 5 and 6 published by Cambridge University Press.

Botanical research in the southern Ecuadorian Andes sponsored by the International Council for Bird Preservation (now Birdlife International) and private companies involving:

  • Habitat surveys in Upper Montane and Premontane Rainforest and Tropical Dry Forest including river corridors.
  • Collecting plant herbarium specimens for the University of Loja Ecuador, Kew Gardens London and Trinity College, Dublin.

National Parks and Wildlife Service

  • Vegetation mapping and monitoring of Special Areas of Conservation for National Parks and Wildlife Service including lakes, fens and raised bogs prior to habitat restoration works being carried out.  
  • Identification and survey of blanket bog sites for the National Parks & Wildlife Service, Department of the Environment, Dublin mainly in the montane regions of Western Ireland with a view to designating additional Natural Heritage Areas. Involved surveying some of Ireland’s most extensive upland areas including the Blue Stacks, Co. Donegal, the Nephin Beg Range Co. Mayo and the Slieve Aughty Mountains and Connemara, Co. Galway.
  • Boundary surveys of Natural Heritage Areas (NHA) and Special Areas of Conservation (SAC) for Dúchas – The Heritage Service in Counties Donegal [North Inishowen Coast (Urris Hills and Lenan Bay), Glenveagh National Park and Cloghernagore Bog (south-west of Errigal and the Owencarrow River Valley), Lough Swilly (Porthaw Woods near Buncrana), Dunlewy Woods around Dunlewy Lough, Tory Island and Gweedore Bay (Rutland Island)], Wicklow (Wicklow Mountains), Dublin (Baldoyle Bay, Howth Head), Kildare (Blackwood Feeder Canal) and Mayo (Clare Island).

Ecological Impact Assessment for golf course and associated holiday homes and hotel, Lough Key Forest Park, Co. Roscommon for Pat Byrne Consultants, Cavan, Republic of Ireland.

Private Landowners

  • Ecological report to the Designated Areas Appeals Advisory Board Republic of Ireland relating to appeal by private landowner against inclusion of lands within the Umrycam Bog, Co. Donegal NHA no. 002406.
  • Ecological surveys of woodlands within Lissadell Estate, Co. Sligo and two woodlands within Co. Wicklow (Vale of Clara and Tomnafinnoge Wood) (for National Parks and Wildlife Service) and woodlands near Ramelton, Co. Donegal (for private landowner) as part of Native Woodland Grant Scheme applications.

Ecological survey of section of old railway line from Woodenbridge to Shillelagh, Co. Wicklow for Wicklow Uplands Council including ecological survey of the Derry River.
